Dr Allan Pacey
Dr Allan Pacey is the Senior Lecturer in Andrology at Sheffield University. In addition to his academic duties, he is also the Head of Andrology for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals where he directs a busy clinical andrology laboratory and am in charge of the sperm banking service.
His research interests are in the biology of human spermatozoa and aspects of semen quality and fertility in males. In recent years, his research has focussed on how micro-organisms such as Chlamydia interact with sperm and affect sperm function.
In the search for better diagnostic methods in the clinic, he has recently collaborated with engineers from the University of Glasgow and applied modelling techniques used in fluid mechanics to better understand how sperm swim. This paper was published in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics in 2008 and shows that swimming speed is closely related to the side and shape of the sperm head.
In 2012 Allan becomes the Chair of the British Fertility Society, he is a scientific editor of a number of peer reviewed journals and he has been an active member of an Advisory Group to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority as part of their 'Donation Policies Review'. In addition he has appeared or advised on a number of TV and Film documentaries
Allan is a prolific twitterer and you can catch him at @allanpacey
