The initial consultation will determine if you are a suitable candidate for IUI. For this treatment at least one of your fallopian tubes must be healthy. If this has not already been established then further tests may be necessary. If your partner’s sperm is to be used then a semen analysis will be carried out at your first consultation, before any treatment is initiated. IUI treatment is also available with donor sperm.
IUI is monitored by ultrasound scans as this allows for more accurate timing of ovulation. The insemination procedure is usually simple and similar to a smear test. The male partner is encouraged to accompany the patient during the procedure. Using a very fine catheter the prepared sperm is deposited inside the uterus via the cervix.
All routine activities, including sexual intercourse, may be resumed after the insemination.
The success rate for IUI is 7%-10% per treatment and so it is recommended that a minimum of 3 treatments should be attempted before considering other options.
