Intrauterine Insemination

The initial consultation will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for IUI. For this treatment, at least one of your fallopian tubes must be healthy and, if this has not already been established, further tests may be necessary. If your partner’s sperm is to be used, a semen analysis will be carried out at your first consultation before any treatment is initiated.

IUI is monitored by ultrasound scans as this allows more accurate timing of ovulation.

The insemination procedure is usually simple and similar to a smear test. The male partner is encouraged to accompany the patient during the procedure. Using a very fine catheter the prepared sperm is deposited inside the uterus via the cervix.

All routine activities, including sexual intercourse, may be resumed after the insemination.

The success rate for IUI is 7% to 10% per treatment and so it is recommended that a minimum of three treatments should be attempted before considering other options.

IUI treatment with Donor Sperm is also available.
