Embryo Development
When all the follicles have been aspirated and the eggs collected, an embryologist will come to see you before you are discharged. The embryologist will confirm the egg number and talk through the procedure for the next few days. The embryologist will provide you with a laboratory guide which will explain what will be happening to your eggs, sperms and embryos and help you to understand the process and give you enough information to ensure you are fully informed and understand the some of the decisions that will need to be made on a day to day basis. Later in the day the embryologists will inseminate the eggs with specially prepared sperm (IVF) or inject a single live sperm into each egg (ICSI).
The morning after egg collection, the embryologist will inform you by midday the number of the eggs that have fertilised. The fertilised eggs (embryos) are monitored daily until their transfer into your uterus, usually between two to five days after egg collection. You will receive daily calls to update you of their progress and finally with information about your embryo transfer appointment.
Currently up to 50% of our patients have a Blastocyst transfer. Blastocyst transfer does yield higher success rates for certain groups of patients. We recommend you read our Blastocyst transfer and Success rate pages for more information.
