Egg Sharing

There is a serious national shortage of egg donors and long waiting lists are often encountered in assisted conception units. Egg sharing was introduced as a means of overcoming the lack of donor eggs. The Egg sharing programme anonymously brings together women needing treatment for different reasons. This gives them the opportunity to help themselves and at the same time help each other.

  • The egg share donor is offered free IVF treatment. In return she will anonymously donate half of the eggs collected to another woman who requires donor eggs.
  • The egg share recipient requires donor eggs, perhaps as a result of her age, early menopause, or chemotherapy, in order to conceive a child.

We have been promoting the Egg Sharing Scheme since the beginning of the 2009 and it has become very popular as both parties benefit from the arrangement.  In fact we currently have just a 4 – 6 month wait for those wanting donated eggs.

Can anyone become an egg share donor?
If you are under 36 years old you will be considered in the first instance. Before you are accepted as an egg share donor you will need to have several blood tests and investigations to confirm your suitability.

What do I do next?
If you are interested in becoming an egg share donor, or putting your name on our waiting list to become an egg share recipient, please do get in touch with us.

The Herts & Essex Fertility Centre has a relatively large and successful egg sharing programme. Due to the complexity of the treatment and the issues involved, it is not possible to elaborate in great detail in this brochure. If you have any queries regarding egg donation/egg sharing, please contact one of our Egg Donation Coordinators for further details.
