Treatment Journey > Embryo Transfer Next Step

Embryo transfer is the process by which developing embryos are transferred into the uterus 2-5 days after egg collection. It is a simple procedure which generally requires no special preparation or anaesthesia, and is similar to a cervical smear test.  A soft catheter is used to transfer the embryos and once the catheter is in position the embryos are ejected from the catheter into the uterus.

You and your partner will have the opportunity to see your embryos on a monitor linked to the laboratory microscope prior to the transfer. We encourage a very relaxed approach to embryo transfer offering you the chance to bring your own music on a CD, and your husband/partner is encouraged to be with you throughout the procedure. The best embryo(s) will be selected for transfer.

We have an obligation to reduce our multiple birth rate under the governance of the HFEA, therefore we will occasionally replace just one embryo in cases where we can be sure we do not reduce your chances of a healthy delivery.  Read more »
