Egg to Embryo
The Egg Recovery
You will be admitted on a day care basis. On arrival at the Centre please present yourself at reception where you will be registered and escorted to the Medical Suite.
The female partner will be prepared for surgery, while the male partner will produce a fresh semen sample.

Egg recovery for IVF/ICSI
Deep sedation similar to a light general anaesthetic will be administered. It is unlikely that you will be aware of significant pain during the procedure. Egg recovery is performed vaginally using a special needle guided by ultrasound scan.

Each follicle is aspirated in turn until all the eggs are collected. A degree of post-operative discomfort is to be expected and pain killers, such as Paracetamol, may be used to provide pain relief at home. A slight vaginal bleed similar to a light period is normal following this procedure.

Production of a semen sample
A fresh semen sample is usually produced before the female partner undergoes egg collection. A quiet room is available and privacy ensured. If it is known beforehand that difficulty may be experienced in producing a specimen in a clinical environment, the sample may be produced at home but it must arrive in the laboratory within one to two hours of production and the male partner must sign a declaration to state that the sperm belongs to him. He must not leave the hospital until the laboratory has confirmed that the specimen is satisfactory.

Occasionally, the male partner may not be available on the day of egg collection. It is important, therefore, that a sample is frozen to be used on the day of egg collection. This may be done even if the partner is available but is concerned that he may have difficulty producing a sample on the day of the operation even at home. However, it is important to note that sperm activity is likely to deteriorate with freezing, and a fresh sample is always preferable. Please note that there is an extra charge for freezing.
