Early pregnancy scan

It can be easy to get carried away with the joy and relief of a new pregnancy, especially if it’s something you’ve dreamed about for some time. But, for many women, the first 12 weeks of pregnancy can be an anxious time. With conflicting, well-meant advice and different opinions to consider, it can be hard to know whether you’re right to be worried about something or whether it’s just a normal part of the first weeks of pregnancy.

If you have had any worrying early symptoms, such as bleeding or pelvic pain, or you’ve experienced problems in a previous pregnancy such as recurrent miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy, an early pregnancy scan can provide the reassurance that everything is progressing as it should be.

Who is an early pregnancy scan for?

All women can have an early pregnancy scan within the first 5-11 weeks of pregnancy. The NHS doesn’t routinely offer a first pregnancy scan until after 12 weeks into your pregnancy, but we know that many women feel the need for reassurance at an earlier stage.

An early pregnancy scan will:

• Determine the presence and location of a pregnancy
• Confirm the fetal heartbeat (possible after 7 weeks of pregnancy)
• Check the viability of a pregnancy (the likelihood of problems or complications)
• Diagnose a multiple pregnancy (singleton, twins, triplets or more)
• Calculate your estimated due date (EDD)

What’s included in your early pregnancy scan?

When you book an early pregnancy scan with us you will receive complimentary black and white pictures of your pregnancy and a printed report that you can show your GP or antenatal clinic, should you wish to.

All of our early pregnancy scans are performed by our experienced consultant gynaecologists and sonographers, who have the expertise to answer any questions you may have.

How much is an early pregnancy scan?

Our same-day or next-day appointment service costs £195, which means that you can receive your early pregnancy scan as early as on the same day that you book it.

We understand that early pregnancy can be a stressful time for some women, so our sonographers are more than happy for you to bring along a partner, friend or family member.

Early pregnancy scans after 10 weeks

If you’re more than 10 weeks pregnant, we also offer the non-invasive NIPT prenatal test which screens for common chromosomal problems. The test can also determine the sex of your baby, should you want to know.
