General Advice
We advise our female patients to drink about two litres of water per day.
If this is not your usual practice, we request that you make a special effort over the treatment cycle. Keeping well hydrated will help prevent headaches whilst taking the fertility drugs, and can also help reduce the effects of ovarian hyperstimulation, should it occur.

Please ensure that you take folic acid: either on its own or as a pre-pregnancy supplement.

Smoking
It is advisable to stop smoking at this stage of your treatment. If you are unable to do stop completely, please reduce the amount smoked to a minimum.

Alcohol
Alcohol intake up to the time of egg collection is acceptable. However, we advise that you do not drink any alcohol after egg collection and embryo transfer.

Normal Activities
It is very important to keep your life as normal as possible. Your sex life can continue up to three days before your egg collection. You are then asked to abstain in order to have a good semen sample for your treatment.

If you exercise regularly, continue as you feel able until your egg collection. Following your operation and embryo transfer it is advisable to stop strenuous exercise, but normal everyday activities can be maintained.

Commencement of Treatment
When all relevant ‘Welfare of the Child Declaration’ documents are completed, and after we have obtained your screening results, treatment may commence at a time best suited to you. You will then be advised to make an appointment with a Nurse Coordinator for a treatment information appointment (TIA).

You will be taught to self-administer the injections required for the programme, the nurse will once again go through the programme with you and help you complete the various consent forms. All injections are subcutaneous (beneath the skin only) and are therefore easily self-administered.
