The initial consultation will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for IUI. For this treatment, at least one of your fallopian tubes must be healthy and, if this has not already been established, further tests may be necessary. If your partner’s sperm is to be used, a semen analysis will be carried out at your first consultation before any treatment is initiated.
IUI is monitored by ultrasound scans as this allows more accurate timing of ovulation. The timing of your first ultrasound scan is linked to the length of your cycle and is usually around Day 10-11 of a normal 28 day cycle. A single injection of hCG (Ovitrelle or Pregnyl) is often prescribed to ripen and effect the release of the egg(s). Insemination is carried out 36-40 hours later.
For IUIH, the male partner will produce a fresh semen sample an hour before the insemination. The sample will be specially prepared in the laboratory as for IVF.
The insemination procedure is usually simple and similar to a smear test. The male partner is encouraged to accompany the patient during the procedure. Using a very fine catheter the prepared sperm is deposited inside the uterus via the cervix.
All routine activities, including sexual intercourse, may be resumed after the insemination.
