Multple Births
It is still current practice to transfer two embryos in the majority of treatments, in such cases there is obviously a greater risk of a multiple pregnancy.
Currently 29% of IVF / ICSI treatments (under 38yrs) are resulting in a twin pregnancy, this is very high and needs careful consideration when discussing the number of embryos to transfer with the clinical staff. In many cases it may be advisable to transfer just one embryo, particularly when having a blastocyst transfer to avoid a high risk multiple birth.

The risks of multiple pregnancy to consider are: higher miscarriage rates, premature deliveries requiring caesarian section and neonatal care, birth weight problems and an increased risk of cerebal palsy.
